Forget the old-school image of cold, rigid labs filled with outdated equipment and fluorescent lights. The Unpad Biomaterials Laboratory reimagines the laboratory experience—infusing it with creativity, comfort, and youth-friendly energy. Designed by Atelier NARK+, this project transforms the conventional laboratory into an experimental learning hub that’s vibrant, relaxed, and inspiring.

Through careful research, we discovered that today’s students crave more dynamic environments. They want labs that don’t just support research, but also encourage interaction, comfort, and creativity. In response, we introduced cozy relaxation zones, playful spatial layouts, and thoughtful use of textures and materials.

Inspired by the spirit of biomaterials themselves, we explored materiality at every level—coating floors, walls, and ceilings with textures that feel tactile, educational, and immersive. From color palettes to furniture choices, every element supports the idea that learning science doesn’t have to be boring.

Unpad’s Biomaterial Lab is now more than just a place to conduct experiments—it’s a youth-centric, interactive space that reflects the future of science education in Indonesia.
